more about MSCsourcing sustainably caught fish
We are committed to offering our customers a range of sustainable food choices across all categories, starting with our seafood range. Our sustainable seafood range is of the highest quality and is accredited by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).*
The MSC certification process follows stringent, ongoing, third party evaluations of a fishery's sustainability. Seafood products certified by the MSC carry its distinctive blue tick eco-label to help you make more sustainable shopping choices.
In March 2009 we became the first grocery retailer to stock a private label MSC certified sustainable seafood product in Australia, with our Ocean Rise Medium Red Salmon.
Since then we have introduced a number of MSC certified lines to our permanent range. Our commitment to sourcing sustainably fished products is long-term, so stay tuned for more MSC certified products and sustainably fished lines to be launched.
where does our fish come from?
We continue to monitor recognised independent lists and work with the MSC to ensure that fish sourced comes from sustainable stocks.

ALDI supports no fishing zones
ALDI supports the closure of High Seas FAO areas 1 & 2 in the Western Central Pacific Ocean to all fishing. We do not currently, and will not, allow suppliers to fish in these areas.
ALDI also supports the proposed marine reserves in the Pacific high seas FAO areas 3 & 4 and can confirm that our fish stocks are not sourced from these areas.
Traceability is confirmed through Captains Statements and IUU Certificates which are made available to ALDI by the fishing vessels supplying our stock on demand.
The use of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs)
The fisheries we source from are currently working towards reducing the use of FADs, and eventual discontinued use, as a priority. There is currently a three month ban every year on the use of FADs in the sourcing of fish stocks. ALDI will continue to pursue FAD free product from Purse Seiners in the future.
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an international non-profit organisation set up to promote solutions to the problem of overfishing. The MSC runs the only certification and ecolabelling program for wild-capture fisheries consistent with the ISEAL Code of Good Practice for Setting Social and Environmental Standards and the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation guidelines for fisheries certification.
To achieve Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, the sustainability of fish stock is measured against an environmental standard that assesses sustainability of the stock, ecosystem impact and effective management of the fishery. The fisheries are in assessment for 12 months by an independent team of experts.
There are 160 fully certified fisheries involved in the MSC program which catch close to ten million metric tonnes of seafood annually - over eight per cent of the total wild fish caught for direct human consumption. Worldwide, more than 14,000 seafood products, which can be traced back to the certified sustainable fisheries, bear the blue MSC label.
