  • Popular Broccoli Pairings
  • Broccoli serves as a savoury, almost peppery addition to cooking. When cooked, the slightly bitter flavours of broccoli offer delicious pairing opportunities, particularly with strong, bitey ingredients.
  • Pair your cooked broccoli with any of the following:
  • Cheeses: bitey cheeses like parmesan or pecorino, tasty or cheddar cheeses for comforting bakes, and salty and rich feta or blue cheese.
  • Spices & Aromatics: sauteed garlic and chilli or ginger for flavour-packed Asian dishes.
  • Acidic additions: Red wine vinegar adds a tangy kick to your greens, and lemon juice brightens the bitter flavours of broccoli.
  • Umami sauces & fats: Asian oils and sauces such as sesame oil, soy sauce, or tamari deepens the veg’s overall flavour, and fats such as olive oil or butter work well for topping or used to fry your broccs.
  • When are broccoli in season in Australia?
  • There’s a reason so many winter dishes feature broccoli, the little greens prefer the cooler months! As the leaves start to fall, the broccoli begins to bloom! You can expect broccoli to come into season in the cooler months of Autumn in May and remain available through until the end of Winter in October.

  • Can you eat broccoli raw?
  • It is safe and healthy to eat your broccoli raw, however, there are some aspects to consider:
  • Taste – raw broccoli can be less sweet or more bitter or even ‘grassy’ tasting. It’s a good idea to dress raw broccoli or dip raw florets into hummus or yogurt based dips.
  • Texture – a key consideration is the woodier texture of raw broccoli. The stems can be particularly fibrous, so it’s a good idea to consider cutting your raw broccoli into finer pieces and grating broccoli is a great option to avoid the extra chew.
  • Digestion – eating broccoli raw has been found to occasionally cause more bloating and gas than when consumed cooked. This can be something to keep in mind when considering your quantities.
  • Is broccoli man-made?
  • Technically, yes. Most fruit and veg have gone through some form of selective breeding in some way over the thousands of years that humans have farmed crops. Broccoli is more unique, however, in that no other core form of the veg grows in the wild – unlike other greens.
  • Broccoli is known to have been derived from a wild cabbage. This cabbage was edible but quite bitter, so farmers decided to, over time, plant the cabbage with seeds of other plants with more desirable flavours. This process is known as selective breeding, which helped create the little green vegetable that we know and love today.
  • Where did broccoli originate from?
  • Different, older forms of broccoli have been around for a very very long time. It is believed that the earliest varieties of broccoli were cultivated in the Mediterranean region during 6th century BCE amid the times of the Roman Empire. Yep, this humble green is part of history!
  • How does broccoli grow?
  • In ways, broccoli is like a thick, large flower! After the seedling shoots, it forms into a thick stem, which then grows a large bud. The bud is the broccoli floret that we eat – it is picked before the plant flowers. A deliciously beautiful broccoli bloom!
