Fun Potato FactsCan you eat raw potato?
Whilst it’s possible to safely eat a small amount of raw white potato, the hard texture and bitter taste will be unpleasant. Due to the high levels of resistant starch in raw potato, eating it is not recommended as it can cause digestion issues and even toxicity (if consumed in a large quantity).
Where is the white potato originally from?Whilst many of us might associate potatoes with the British Isles, the little spuds that we know today are in fact native to Southern Peru.
Can a washed potato go bad?Yes, your washed white potatoes can go bad, however correct storage will ensure they last for as long as possible. Be sure to store your potatoes in a dark and dry space (like the pantry or a potato chest) and keep them away from onions (as onions can accelerate potatoes spoilage). You can expect your washed potatoes to last between 1-2 weeks when stored correctly.
Can you freeze raw white potatoes?Freezing raw potato is not recommended as the high water content can cause them to thaw mushy and grainy. Instead, it is best to cut up and blanch your potatoes for 3-5 minutes in boiling water, plunge the potato into an ice bath, dry the pieces, then store them into airtight zip lock bags in the freezer. Alternatively, if you have time, make your potatoes into mash and then store the mash into an airtight container in the fridge.
