The cavendish bananas that you find in most stores do contain seeds; however, these are much smaller and less fertile than wild bananas. Wild, non-commercial bananas contain very large seeds and have less sweet flesh.

You may be surprised to hear this but yes, bananas are classed as ‘berries’. Botanically speaking, fruits are considered a berry when they grow from a flower with a single ovary, possess a fleshy middle and soft outer skin, and contain seeds. Funnily enough, from a botanical standpoint, strawberries and raspberries aren’t classed as ‘true berries’, however fruits such as blueberries, cranberries, grapes, kiwis, and even watermelons and eggplants are deemed as berries!

Whilst humans only share around 1% of our entire DNA with bananas, we do share more than 60% of our genes. These genes that we share with bananas are considered the ‘housekeeping’ genes, and help with cellular functions such as replicating DNA, controlling the cell cycle, and cell division.

There are over 1,000 different banana varieties growing globally, each with their own unique colour and flavour. Impressively, some bananas can come in red (like the Rath Kesse from Sri Lanka) or blue (like the Blue Java from Southeast Asia).
