  • Juicy Kensington Pride mango facts
  • Are Kensington Pride mangoes native to Australia?
  • No Kensington Pride mangoes are not native to Australia. Mangoes originally grew in Southeast Asia, however modern varieties such as the Australian Kensington Pride have been cultivated in other regions of the world.
  • Where did Kensington Pride mangoes originate from?
  • Kensington Pride mangoes get their name from the Kensington farm in Northern Queensland, where the farmer Harry Lott developed the Kensington variety in the late 1800s. The ‘Pride’ part of the name is self-explanatory, farmer Lott was very proud of the colour, shape, texture, and of course, the taste of the mango. So are we!
  • What is the best way to cut a Kensington Pride mango?
  • One of the best ways to cut a juicy ripe Kensington Pride is via the ‘grid’ or ‘hedgehog’ technique.
  • Simply follow these steps:
  • Place the mango vertically on your cutting board.
  • Slice the two largest cheeks off the mango.
  • Slice a grid into both cheeks’ flesh – be sure to cut deep but no so deep that it cuts the skin!
  • Now for the fun part – pop open your cheek with the grin marks by pushing up against the skin until the grid opens into the ‘hedgehog’ shape. Grab a spoon and scoop the mango segments or skip the spoon and bite them off directly!
  • Trim the remaining parts of the mango – there should still be a fair amount of fruit around the seed – you can use a spoon or just bite around the skin and seed.
  • Are Bowen mangoes the same as Kensington Pride mangoes?
  • Yes! The beloved mango is so popular, it goes by many names. Bowen mango is one of those names, signifying the town of Bowen in Northern Queensland where the mango was cultivated. Other popular names for Kensington Pride mango include ‘Bowen Special’, ‘KP Mango’, ‘KP, and ‘Pride of Bowen’. Whichever way you refer to it, it’s always delish!
